Is the safety glass installed in your home safe?

  2022-12-07

01 What is safety glass? and its common applications

This safety glass is that the original glass sheet has been processed through a series of processes to become a glass that is not easily broken by severe vibrations and impacts, and is not easy to hurt people.

For example, the two big disciples in safety glass—tempered glass and laminated glass—both have five times the strength of ordinary glass.

Even if it breaks and bursts, the fragments of tempered glass are still obtuse-angled particles; while the fragments of laminated glass will be stuck by the film, and a certain strength can be guaranteed~

In the national standard, tempered glass, laminated glass and the products made of them are called safety glass.

However, although this safety glass is good, it is also required to be used in home decoration. For example, all doors and windows in high-rise buildings (7 floors and above) must use safety glass; Laminated glass; Laminated glass must be used for inclined assembly windows such as the top, glass ceiling, skylight and suspended ceiling of the sun room.

In addition, it is also recommended to choose safety glass for indoor glass doors and glass partitions.

Why does Baydee want everyone to use safety glass in the above situations?

The reason is as stated at the beginning, the strength of safety glass is several times that of ordinary glass.

Such as tempered glass, compared with ordinary glass, the tensile strength is more than 3 times that of the latter, and the impact resistance is more than 5 times that of the latter, which greatly protects our safety.

02 Safety glass ≠ absolute guarantee of safety

Having clarified safety glass and its application, we return to this surprising title.

Why did Baydee give such a conclusion? There are mainly the following aspects:

(1) "Temptation" of merchants

Many consumers equate safety glass with the concept of "absolutely guaranteed safety".

Baydee believes that this is inseparable from the misleading of unscrupulous merchants, caught Xiaobai and said: I sell hollow laminated glass! Laminated glass is good, tempered! This kind of glass is called safety glass, and the name is easy to recognize. It is guaranteed to be strong, and it will be foolproof after using it!

However, this is completely instilling the wrong concept of safety glass in the home improvement rookie.

The function of safety glass is only to improve the safety of glass use and prevent accidents as much as possible, but it does not guarantee "safety".

(2) Tempered glass will self-explode

Tempered glass self-explosion itself is a small probability event. In the industry, the self-explosion rate of tempered glass is generally judged to be around 3 - 5 ‰ (note that it is not one percent, but one thousand~)

Baydee tried to enter "tempered glass self-explosion" in the search bar, and there were more than 7 million related content. It seems that this kind of incident is not an exception.

Presumably, it is also because the original sheet of tempered glass itself contains nickel sulfide impurities, and some glass deep-processing factories have poor equipment and quality control, etc., resulting in the problem of self-explosion of tempered glass that cannot be directly eliminated from the root cause.

In addition to the self-explosion of tempered glass, the thickness of the glass is also a major issue related to the safety of tempered glass.

In the building code for home improvement doors and windows, the thickness of the glass mainly matches the glass area of different glasses (for example, for a single glass with an area of ≤ 2 ㎡, tempered glass with a thickness of 4 mm can be used), and as the area increases, use glass that meets the specifications Thickness, in order to improve the safety of glass use.

In addition to the safety of tempered glass linked to its thickness, the same is true for laminated glass.

(3) Laminated glass is also "shot"

Laminated glass is mostly used in sun rooms. Its performance is of course very good, but it is still the best place to start by unscrupulous merchants, making fuss on film.

They will probably use two methods: first, use glue to make the so-called "wet method" glue to attract the novices (don't be tempted by this high-sounding name, "wet method installation" is a pit ); Second, the film quality of the laminated glass itself is not good (the glue layer will turn yellow after three to five years, affecting the appearance, and the sound insulation and glass strength will continue to decrease), or the glass and film The degree of bonding between them is not high, and there is a possibility of failure and falling at any time.

Inferior film not only cannot guarantee the safety of the glass, but also leads to crises everywhere.

In addition to the quality of laminated glass itself, its thickness specification and installation also affect safety.

For example, when we build a sun room, we choose laminated insulating glass (both laminated layer and hollow layer), then the laminated surface should be installed facing down (closer to the interior), so as to prevent injuries when the glass is accidentally broken.

And when the laminated insulating glass is in the facade state (like a high-rise building), the laminated surface should be on the outside. The purpose of this is also to prevent the accident of falling objects after the glass is broken.

Some low-level residential users do not need to think too much about the accident of glass falling off and hurting people. They choose to install insulating laminated glass in the bedroom for the pursuit of good heat insulation and sound insulation.

Under such a premise, the laminated surface can be placed indoors, which can make the heat insulation of doors and windows relatively better.

In addition to the thickness of the glass, laminated insulating glass also has an additional layer of film thickness.

Since the PVB film thickness is 0.38 mm, the interlayer thickness of laminated glass is a multiple of 0.38 mm.

As the thickness of the glass increases, the thickness of the film also increases. The thickness of the two cannot match, so the bearing capacity of the thin film cannot support the weight of the glass at all.

03 What to do to ensure the safety of safety glass to the greatest extent

Baydee answers this question from three aspects - how to buy, how to sell and how to use.

how to buy

(1) The source of glass is very important

The concept that consumers must know - the glass deep processing plant is very important.

When many consumers buy glass, they will emphasize that the original glass of their own is from a big brand, so as to express the quality of their products.

But the most important factor affecting the quality of glass is still the glass deep processing factory - the strength of the factory in glass workmanship determines the final quality of the finished product.

In a relatively standardized glass deep-processing factory, a glass deep-processing factory with better workmanship and higher-quality materials can provide consumers with higher-quality glass products and product types.

Deep processing of glass and glass from small workshops, the workmanship is really not flattering.

Omitting necessary processes and auxiliary materials (such as not using molecular sieves and using poor sealant) has caused many problems; in the name of the original glass factory, it is making garbage finished products.

Therefore, the degree of standardization and the strength behind the glass deep processing plant are also extremely important. Consumers must pay attention to this when purchasing glass.

(2) Check the certificate to see the logo

Most of the glass surfaces we see will have the 3 C logo printed on them. Many people may not have noticed this, but in fact, having the 3 C mark can already represent to a certain extent that it is certified "good" glass.

If you look at the logo but are still not at ease, you can also ask the merchant to show the certification certificate of the relevant product.

Furthermore, regular factories that produce safety glass must undergo relevant inspections on a regular basis, and should be able to provide glass inspection reports issued by the quality inspection department.

If you ask the merchant, but he is vague and unable to provide relevant certificates, then the quality of this product...everyone knows~

how to drop

So what should we do to reduce the self-explosion rate of tempered glass and prevent the recurrence of the "Xiao Zhang Incident"?

Baydee thinks there are three ways to avoid this disadvantage:

1. We can choose hollow tempered glass made of ultra-white sheets (the chance of self-explosion is almost lower than 1‰, but the cost will also increase)

2. Choose semi-tempered insulating glass and its products with a smaller self-explosion rate.

3. If you install glass in the shower room, you can also choose laminated glass. However, the thickness of the selected glass should not be less than 3 mm, and it is not recommended to use it directly, but to cooperate with it (intermediate layer, edge protection and functional film have rigid regulations, which must be strictly followed).

Baydee will make a standard summary of several places where safety glass must be used in home decoration:

(1) When we plan to install frameless floor-to-ceiling windows in our home decoration, the glass thickness of the tempered glass must reach 12 mm (or above);

(2) Choose to make glass partitions indoors. When there is a frame, tempered glass with a thickness of not less than 5 mm or laminated glass with a thickness of not less than 6.38 mm should be selected. When there is no frame, the thickness of the tempered glass should be 10 mm. mm, if it is used as a partition in the bathroom, tempered glass not less than 5 mm should be selected;

(3) When we build the roof of the sun room, the thickness of the film used for the glass must be greater than or equal to 0.76 mm.

How to use

(1) Check the appearance

We have to carefully check the appearance of the glass, whether there are edge chips and other small problems, because in these cases, the stress structure of the glass may be damaged, so it must be handled with care.

(2) Corner protection is very important

The corner protection of safety glass is particularly important, for example, the stress points of tempered glass are all concentrated at the corners.

(3) There must be no less glass blocks

When installing, pay attention to whether the glass is in a horizontal and vertical state, and pay attention to whether the master has missed the glue and whether the glass spacer is installed.
